Jim - Creator of Practical Code

Welcome! I’m Jim, a full-stack and front-end software developer with around 30 years of commercial engineering experience, including nearly two decades as an independent contractor across web and backend architecture.

Throughout my career in the UK and internationally, I’ve designed, built, and maintained enterprise applications across various industries—working extensively with modern technologies like C#, ASP.NET Core, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Angular, Vue, and React.

Why Practical Code?

Software engineering guides often lean too heavily on abstract theory or superficial "hello world" demos that gloss over production constraints. I created Practical Code (and authored Building Your First Shopping Basket: A Friendly Guide to C# and Razor Pages) to bridge that gap.

My goal here is to provide clear, hands-on tutorials built from real commercial experience. Whether you're mastering clean architecture, optimizing database access with EF Core, or connecting backend API services with modern front-end frameworks, every guide is designed to give you code you can actually ship.
